History of first group of Missionaries and Cambodia
In the mid-sixteenth century, Spanish and Portuguese missionaries came to Cambodia, hoping to convert local people to Christianity and even to join Cambodia to the Spanish Empire. They had some success with minority populations, but little among the Buddhist Khmer. As one missionary commented, Christians can not be made without the king’s approval. He went on to say that the common people worshipped the Buddhist monks.
There is no person who dares contradict them in anything. It happened that while I was preaching many round me hearing me very well, and being very satisfied with what I told them, that if there come along any of these priests and said, This is good but ours id better. They would all depart.
The Cambodia kings tolerated the missionaries without encouraging them, because they hoped to gain benefits for themselves by trading with new European settlements Good in demand from Cambodia and Laos included ivory, gold, incenses, lacquer, spices, hides, precious stone, and rhinoceros horns. At these stage Moslem advisors, probably CHAM convert or Malays appeared at the Cambodia court. International trading was largely in their hands. The Cambodia words KOMPONG Mean Port and PSAA Mean Market comes from Malay word; PHNOM PENH at this time was cosmopolitan, with Japanese, Malay, European, and Arab sections of the City.
